Documentation: WILLRIVR The WILLRIVR ArcView shapefile provides a link between local observations of past events, activities and conditions and their geographic line locations within the network of the Williams Creek stream system. The information provided through this database was developed primarily through a series of semi-structured interviews (or conversations) with long-term residents of the Williams watershed area south of Grants Pass, Oregon. This information is linked to a spatial database of streams derived from the EPA river reach file. There are thirteen separate streams within the database. Each of these streams is linked to a separate database record describing the source information and providing a link to more detailed textual information. One record includes a link to an associated digital photo Primary Variable Fields NAME [character] Name of stream as indicated in the source river coverage (e.g., West Fork Williams Creek, Powell Creek, Munger Creek). Thirteen separate streams and tributaries are included. LINK [numeric] Unique code identifying an individual stream. Several streams in the ArcView shapefile have multiple segments, resulting in multiple occurrences of NAME, LINK and other associated items that apply to the entire stream. TYPE1 [character] Characterization of the general nature of the observation and site. The only category in this file is "stream." TYPE2 [character] Additional characterization of the general nature of the observation and site. Only three categories are used. fish historic trapping BDATE [character] Initial approximate year for which observations apply. This field is vacant when there is insufficient information from key informants. EDATE [character] Last approximate year for which observations apply. This field is vacant when there is insufficient information from key informants. Note: the BDATE and EDATE fields are the same for single event observations such as floods. CODES [character] Alpha-numeric codes representing the conversation or conversations from which information for individual records was derived. Information from one conversation may be applied to several records, and one record may utilize information from several conversations. The codes are developed from a combination of the date of theconversation and the initials of the interviewers (e.g., 122096PRCY, 012197PRCY). TEXT [character] Brief textual description of the observation and site. Additional or more detailed descriptions are generally available in a related text document (see TXTLNK). TXTLINK [character] Path name and document containing detailed text description of observation and site. This field can be used in ArcView to "hot-link" the points in the WILLRIVR theme to detailed text descriptions. Most, but not all records have associated text documents. As written in the table, the ArcView project must be one directory below the AG_DATA directory. Example: AG_DATA/DATA/TXTLNK/str112.TXT where AG_DATA/DATA/TXTLNK is the path to the TXTLNK directory within the DATA directory within the AG_DATA directory, and str112.TXT.txt is the text document within the TXTLNK directory related to the record for LINK 112. PHOTOLNK [character] Path name and photo file related to the observation and site. This field can be used in ArcView to "hot-link" the points in the WILLRIVR theme to relevant photos. Not all records have associated photos. As written in the table, the ArcView project must be one directory below the AG_DATA directory. Example: AG_DATA/DATA/PHOLNK/DGRAY1.GIF where AG_DATA/DATA/TXTLNK is the path to the PHOLNK directory within the DATA directory within the AG_DATA directory, and DGRAY1.GIF is the text document within the PHOLNK directory related to the subject record. ------------------------------------ The field data were collected under the direction of Interrain Pacific between October, 1996 and March, 1997 as part of a local knowledge development pilot project. Local knowledge is defined here as site-specific information derived from individuals--regardless of position, education or credential--who, by nature of their residence, work or activity have made direct observations of resource conditions, events and activities within a specific geographic area of interest. The database was developed by Interrain Pacific in May, 1997. Interrain Pacific 1200 NW Front Street, Suite 490 Portland, Oregon 97209 503-226-8108 www.interrain.org
