The data on this CD-ROM is a compilation of some geographic data and other related information for the Applegate Watershed in Southern Oregon. It is designed to be used primarily with ArcView, GIS and mapping software created by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI). Much of the data can also be accessed by other spatial software tools, including ESRI's ArcExplorer.
For users with access to either ArcView 2.x or ArcView 3.x a single ArcView project file (Applegate.apr) is included in the main directory of the CD. The Applegate project includes several views that showcase a small portion of the data on the CD. While the project file and the data can be downloaded onto your hard disk, the relative position of files within existing directories must remain constant for the project file to function properly.
A pre-release version of ESRI's ArcExplorer is included as a PC-executable file on this CD. While less sophisticated than ArcView GIS, ArcExplorer permits simple viewing and querying of many types of spatial data. It is provided as free software by ESRI. The executable is located in the SOFTWARE directory on the CD. Documentation for ArcExplorer is provided in the accompanying PDF file, accessible with Adobe Acrobat, which is also included as an executable file. (Sorry, Mac users, the PC is currently the only platform for ArcExplorer.) For more information on their software, or to download more current versions of ArcExplorer visit ESRI's site on the World Wide Web .
The GIS data contained here are in the form of ArcView Shape files, ArcInfo coverages, and ArcInfo grids. Geo-referenced image data are in the form of LAN files or grids. Files with a "SHP" extension are ArcView Shapefiles. Those with a "LAN" extension are image files. All Geo-spatial data and related information are contained in topical folders (directories) within the AG_DATA folder.
All spatial data on this CD is based on the UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinate system and is projected in UTM Zone 10. The map units of the data are in meters.
